Medical English Exam Changes on the Horizon

June 15, 2023 - The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) has announced proposed changes to the Medical English Exam (MEE). The MEE is a standardized exam that assesses the English language proficiency of foreign-trained physicians.

The NBME is proposing to move the MEE from a standalone exam to one that is integrated into the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). The USMLE is a three-step exam that is required for all physicians who wish to practice in the United States.

The proposed changes are designed to improve the efficiency and fairness of the medical licensing process.

The NBME is seeking public comment on the proposed changes. Comments can be submitted online until July 15, 2023.
